Aqualectra takes a firm stance against irregularities in installations

Friday, October 27, 2023

Willemstad, October 26, 2023 – After the two-month grace period ending on October 31st, Aqualectra will implement a stringent approach against third parties causing irregularities to installations or engaging in the illegal use of water and/or electricity. Starting from November 1, 2023, Aqualectra will impose heavy penalties, including substantial fines that can go up to ANG20,000. Aqualectra will also file reports when irregularities are detected, and individuals may face prosecution by the Public Prosecutor's Office, with all the associated consequences. Finally, the results of the actions taken will be reported and made public.

Significant losses and additional costs are incurred due to third parties illegally removing or manipulating parts of the distribution network to make unlawful use of water and/or electricity. As a result, the community bears the additional burdens that arise. Currently, customers who comply with their obligations collectively shoulder the costs caused by irregularities. Aqualectra has been working for some time on implementing projects and developments to promote reliable and affordable water and electricity. The Grace Period is one such initiative that was established to encourage individuals using water and/or electricity illegally to register so that their installation could be corrected without incurring penalties or costs. The Grace Period began on September 1, 2023, and ends on October 31, 2023.

Inspection Team

Starting from November 1, 2023, Aqualectra will launch public actions to report irregularities in the distribution network and the unauthorized use of water and electricity at homes, businesses, or other locations. An inspection team composed of representatives from Aqualectra, the KPC (Police), and the Public Prosecutor's Office will take strong measures against irregularities. Once irregularities are detected, residents or business owners can expect substantial fines of up to ANG20,000, as well as the payment of costs associated with corrective work on the installation, potential legal actions, and media publication of the results of the actions taken. Individuals must also consider that, in addition to the fine, they will be required to pay for the period during which unauthorized use occurred and any other outstanding bills.

Up until October 31, 2023, individuals can still register via Aqualectra's website, www.aqualectra.com, through the WhatsApp number +5999 563-0135, or by calling Aqualectra's Customer Service during office hours at phone number 0800-0135 and selecting option 4. When registering, the individual will receive a reference number.
